Why hiring an apprentice can bring benefits

Derby CathedralRecruiting an apprentice can bring many benefits to organisations, says Carol Thomas, Head of Operations at Derby Cathedral. She tells us why she advocates apprenticeships and why the Cathedral is now looking to hire an additional apprentice to join its growing team.

It’s been a busy time for Derby Cathedral following the extensive refurbishment of its bookshop and café. The two have been merged and together named The Sanctuary at Derby Cathedral. With a fresh new look, the combined café, gift and book store is becoming increasingly busier.

Jasmine Gill joined Derby Cathedral only last September as their first apprentice and is now ably working through an advanced level apprenticeship in business administration.

“I am passionate about encouraging young people into the world of business and think apprenticeships are key to this,” explained Carol, who was responsible for recruiting Jasmine through Learning Unlimited in Derby.

“Further education in a traditional setting such as sixth form and college does not appeal to everyone and having the opportunity to work and learn at the same time is a great opportunity for the right person.”

She says the business has also benefited too from the recruitment of an apprenticeship as Jasmine, now 17, has bought a certain enthusiasm and creativity to the role. She slotted into the role perfectly at a time when it was a particularly busy and challenging time for the organisation. Changes were taking place, the venue was being refurbished and Jasmine was able to ensure the smooth running of aspects of the business.

“Jasmine was a very calming influence in the office and ‘looked after’ the new staff, showing them where things were kept, answering the telephone in a very professional manner and dealing with enquiries. Without Jasmine, we wouldn’t be able to do some of the things we want to do in the office.”

Jasmine continues to develop and learn through the support of Learning Unlimited. Added Carol: “I did think as an apprentice, Jasmine, might be left to her own devices when it came to  the learning side, however, she meets regularly – as I do – with Learning  Unlimited and has developed a good relationship with her mentor.”

In fact, so impressed has she been with Jasmine’s progress that Derby Cathedral are currently recruiting for another apprentice, this time to assist in the café/gift shop.
