Lewis describes his engineering apprenticeship with Slack & Parr, an established engineering firm in Derby, as interesting, exciting and hard work but a great way to get trained, qualified and paid at the same time.
After school Lewis initially chose to study for an engineering qualification at college and loved the practical side of the course. When he saw the apprenticeship opportunity with Slack & Parr he realised that working towards a qualification in this way would mean he could do a lot more of the practical side that he loved in a real work environment.
“Working and studying at the same time has been the best combination for me. It’s a big change from school and it is hard work but what I am getting from it is really worthwhile. I really enjoy going to college once a week but I have also learnt so much from Slack & Parr. Here, you spend a year in a training school learning the basics and then you move onto working in the workshop with the real machines under the supervision of experienced engineers.”
The company has invested so much in me and I can see that I can progress to work on more complex machines and eventually towards a leadership role.
