Employing an apprentice

Taking on an apprentice with the help of Learning Unlimited is a simple process designed to take up as little of your time as possible. Not only will we support you through every step of the recruitment process, but we’ll continue to offer help and advice once your apprentice has started their training. Here’s how it works:

Initial contact

One of our representatives will meet with you to discuss your objectives, conduct a FREE organisational needs analysis to identify your requirements and propose a training package tailored to your business. You’ll also be advised on your eligibility for grants and funding.

Checks

We’ll conduct initial health and safety checks on your premises and agree a training plan with you.

Agreement

The successful candidate is enrolled as a Learning Unlimited apprentice and begins their career journey with your business. You can then access advice on employment contracts and your obligations with regards to safeguarding, and equality and diversity.

Induction

Making sure apprentices get off to a good start is vital. We have developed a unique induction programme which covers key factors for a successful apprenticeship. Upon completion of the induction you can be assured that you and your apprentice will fully understand the commitment and expectations.

 

FREE recruitment service

If you decided to take on an apprentice you can choose to take advantage of our FREE recruitment service. As part of this offer, we’ll:

  • take the time to get to know your business needs and discuss the vacancy with you
  • draw up a job description and specification
  • advertise the vacancy on your behalf
  • shortlist suitable candidates
  • help you to interview the shortlisted applicants
  • offer the successful candidate the position and arrange a start date

 

How much will it cost?

The government has made a significant amount of funding available for employers who want to take on apprentices as part of their growth plans. The level of funding an employer receives depends on the age of the apprentice:

  • 16-18 years old – training is free
  • 19-23 years old – you could be required to make a contribution towards training costs depending on the size of your company
  • 24 years old and above – you could be required to make a contribution towards training costs depending on the sector.

Wages

An apprenticeship is essentially a real job and therefore all apprentices should be treated the same way other employees. You’ll need to set a wage for your apprentice, no lower than the current National Minimum Wage. However, we can support you in applying for grants to cover some of this cost. How is training delivered?

Training has been designed to cause minimal disruption to everyday business and as a result can be delivered in a range of ways, including in the workplace, online or on day release to a local college or training provider.
