Higher apprenticeships build a better future

Leah Shortt

Work-based learning is giving businesses the chance to develop employees and attract new talent, says Leah Shortt, Operations Manager at Learning Unlimited.

The needs of your business are unique, and so are our programmes. In a competitive market place, it is crucial that companies develop and invest in their employees to make sure they remain ahead of the market.

Working in partnership with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), we are able to support the development of team leaders and managers with a range of management and leadership training that helps them, while you build a better future. Leadership and management training is useful for developing operational, departmental, team leading and supervisory management skills. It covers skills across areas such as project management, performance management, leadership skills, finance, communication, coaching, problem solving and building effective relationships.

The benefits of  developing employees allows you to develop talent within your existing workforce to plug skills gaps rather than recruit new staff. Following and during training, staff will add value, innovation and insight to the business as they study. It gives current employees the chance to develop in different areas and perhaps give them the opportunity to make a change in their career, whilst also drawing on transferable skills. It also helps employees meet their potential, whilst also helping employers retain skilled staff as they demonstrate their commitment to staff training and development.

Level 3 Line Management:
Communications Advisor, Simon Towers, was offered the opportunity by his employers of 11 years to study an Introduction to Line Management Level 3 apprenticeship. He’s now part way through his 18-month course, which he is carrying out with the support of Learning Unlimited. It is giving him the chance to build on the skills he already has and develop knowledge in a different area. He said: “The course explores different methods of management and in terms of work allows me to look at different ways of working. The course has given me so many opportunities to develop my skills and will help me progress my career. It’s making me a more effective member of the team and altered the way that I approach work. It’s given me a new-found motivation and I look at things in a different way already.”

Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering:
Engineer, Kieren Williams, began his career with an apprenticeship with recycling specialist, RBC Bpi, and gained a Level 3 Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering before progressing onto his Higher National Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, which he achieved with a high distinction grade. He is working towards a Higher National Diploma. Kieren said: “Everything I’ve learned doing my apprenticeship and HNC has helped me in my day to day job. Completing a HNC has opened doors for me.”
