Electrical engineering company, Sulzer is the first to be named as our Employer of the month in an initative which is designed to reward organisations which show a high level of commitment to the apprenticeship model and go above and beyond to get the most out of their apprentices at the same time as giving them a fantastic opportunities to develop their careers.
James Goulding, Assistant Works Manager and the staff at Sulzer put an incredible amount of effort into the development of their apprentices. They attend regular review meetings and ensure they are fully involved in their progression, which includes choosing a specialism to train in – something that Sulzer is keen to involve both the apprentice and Learning Unlimited in.
From day one, Sulzer ensure the apprentices are inducted into the right way of doing things, ethics and the company ethos play a big part of any apprentices development. This includes understanding health and safety in the workplace, learning how electrical motors work, how to strip down and rebuild, service and maintain motors and carrying out site work. This ensures the apprentices cover all aspects of electrical motors used in industry, which fully prepares them for their future career. They are a great example of how employers should approach the apprenticeship model.
James, who also started his career as an apprentice told us how vital his apprentices are to the business. He said:
“It’s an honour to be recognised for the work we do with our apprentices but it makes perfect sense to do everything we do with them to develop their skills. It is really hard to attract young people to heavy engineering these days so having an attractive, interesting and well designed apprenticeship scheme helps us to make sure we attract the next generation and get the skills we need.”
